Armed more with truth than reason, I reject
variety in love. Anticipation
for me is all its glory, dissipation
from mating mateless the aftereffect.

Yet daily possibilities charge at us,
and the initial steps seem far too easy,
so that, I ween, the founders of our species
never loved a thing when they begat us,

though the result at least was pregnancy.
Masturbation’s no more solitary,
I think, than safe sex swinging voluntary,
fearful of loitering and vagrancy.

Who has not worn his heart a day and found
a hole that only love and truth can sound?

Edward Wright Haile

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/zz-335-i-reject-variety-in-love/
