JAMES T. ADAIR - Yesterday We Listened To Heartbeats

She didn't look at me
as she said
'I don't Love you'
because she didn't get her way
It hurt inside anyway
to hear her say
and that broken heart in me
that I try to keep tucked away
broke a little more
in ways impossible to convey
and I smiled as I said goodbye
as they were leaving anyway
I said, 'don't worry, that's OK'
'you, don't have to love me'
I heard myself say
as my daughter and her little girl
reminded me
that forever silent I should stay
A man really doesn't have any say
regarded as a throw-away
But it hurts inside this empty Sunday
Little girls learn young how to get their way
But sadness falls on someone as it must
and it fell on me today
though the sun shines through the window
and softens through the sheers
my stomach feels so tight
and yet I can't let out the tears
and everything instead feels grey
I need someone warm to run to
but everyone has gone away
There's a football playoff about to start on TV
I close my heart lest it break inside of me
and watch them play

JAMES T.
