Our voices blend together.
The night air fills our lungs.
Happy smiles we both are sharing,
Makes me feel so very young.

A crowd is gathered in dim light.
I look left then to my right.
I realize that the most beauty rare,
Sits beside me on this night.

We cheer the knights who defend us all,
In the service of our king.
And if beauty was all that’s required,
You’d sit beside him as his queen.

The horses canter, trot, then bow,
Till “All Rise” comes from the throne.
The king then praises the heroic deeds,
Of the defender of our home.

Games of jousting skill, and swordsmanship,
And a challenge unto the death,
For the hero left standing shall risk his life,
To battle the evil Black Night.

They valiantly fought until daylight appeared.
The Yellow Knight rose to these words,
“Rise now my champion as we call you Lord, ”
This new title sealed by Majesty’s sword.

Black Knight arrives, throws down his glove.
The challenge is now declared.
The kingdom is his if he crushes our Lord,
Instead of an all out war.

The battle is brutal and very hard fought.
The Black Knight is cunning and smart.
When it appeared that all had been lost,
Our hero’s sword was more sharp.

A banquet prepared by servants and slaves,
All his subjects were called to a feast.
A toast to the throne and the mighty Knight,
Who ravaged the dreaded black beast.

The goblets and urns with wine and ale flowed,
And with twirls did the wenches all dance.
The loyal subjects celebrated for days,
And the youth were then filled with romance.

Robert Edgar Burns

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-valiant-knight/
