G.R. Gaus - The Cabin

An idea begins with creative thought,
Followed soon by drawing a plan,
Finding a location, timely sought,
Measurements consistent with span.

Level the surface or roughly so,
Setting corners, steady in place
Joining the roof to joists below,
Studs, holding firmly as brace.

Openings for windows left precise,
Doors must be level and plumb,
Corner to corner, must suffice,
Square; general rule of thumb.

Screwing the metal roof tight,
Joints lapped over one another,
Pitch drops perfectly right,
Sheathing allowed to cover.

Attached is the luxurious deck,
The view is really quite divine,
A little large but what the heck,
Both together they intertwine.

Tongue and groove siding, seals,
Moisture and insects; outside,
Knots and grain truly reveals,
Natural wood, stained and dyed.

Flooring covers the crawl space,
Ceiling and walls fit the design,
Tables and lamps, all in place,
Small kitchen in which to dine.

The fireplace now, waits to be lit,
To complete this long final scheme,
Pardon me dear, be back in a bit,
Pinch me; it all feels like a dream.

G.R.
