After a hard days laziness
I sit relaxed in a tuxedo all dressed
My canine looks up at me in askance
I suspect it suspects I am out for a dance.

But where and when is the party?
I wonder, deep in thought, sipping my Bacardi
Oh gosh! ! Today is a the day of the “Roll call”
The all’s get together, “the old fogey’s ball”.

Should I or shouldn't, I am undecided
Last year I had gone gate crashed uninvited
Its aftermath makes me hesitate, can I, can’t I or maybe
The worm in my grey matter tells me once again, her I shall see.

I know she’ll perhaps be with her Sumo wrestler husband
Oh! What the heck, who knows, by now he could have met his end
She sure was and is my age old heartthrob, my obsession
Despite denials, refusals, I have to make that confession.

Whilst at school, I had tried all tricks in the book
Did what I could to make her just glance…oh! Please look
She showed no compassion, my love went unrequited
Assiduously courting her, she made me look so pedantic.

Finally at the ‘Ball’, slink in tentatively, looking out for her
Suddenly I hear a guffaw and a large claw catches my collar
Unable to budge, I know I am done for
My head tells me, dead you are - a certain goner.

While flying through the air, I feel a stinging pain in my behind
In that flash, I convince myself I've been through worse grind
Could try yet again next year, after all it was not her rejection
It is another matter that my behind doesn’t recognize my mind’s infection.

Deepak Sawhney

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/incorrigible-love/
