Stacked upon her back <br />The guilt of others who pretend to care <br />But refuse to share in the sorrows <br />The weight was robbing her <br />Of her inner life and light <br /> <br />With arms outstretched toward the sun <br />She closes her eyes <br />In a soft, tender voice <br />Her words are powerful <br />“Release me! ” <br /> <br />The sun’s rays beam gently upon her forehead <br />Kissing it softly <br />As if to say, <br />“You are finally free to be the woman this world has waited for.” <br /> <br />The warmth of the electric rays <br />Engulfed her soul <br />The smile freely spread across her face <br />Letting her know she was finally free <br />To walk out of the torrid gates <br />Of stereotypical mental slavery <br /> <br />The Black woman <br />The African woman <br />The Colored woman <br />African-American <br />The moniker doesn’t matter <br /> <br />She is free <br />To be a woman like all others <br />No privileges <br />Just honor and respect <br /> <br />Her womanhood is why <br />This world exists <br />Without her we all shall die <br /> <br />Written 8/14/2013<br /><br />Clarissa Burton<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/she-bent-over-from-the-heaviness-of-burdens/
