Monique Sapla - The Day the Nazis walked away

They burst in through the front door
Their heavy boots stomp on the floor
They search the rooms and smash the glass
Even my mother's favourite vase

They bellow orders, 'FINDET SIE'
My mother's sobbing silently
I hold her hand and start to pray
'Don't let them find us here today'

I hear them thundering up the stairs
I hope the Lord has heard my prayers
Mama and I grow still as stones
A shiver runs right through my bones

He stays a while, then turns and leaves
I breathe out a sigh of relief
The steps then freeze, he's coming back!
The sound comes closer 'clack clack clack'

The cupboard doors swing open wide
With nowhere left for us to hide
I stare into his deep green eyes
That look right back in shock, surprise

The man downstairs calls out his name
He turns to walk away again
Mama and I watch on in awe
As he marched right out through the door

We never ever forgot that day
The day the Nazis walked away

Monique Sapla

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-day-the-nazis-walked-away/
