As the bonfire commences on the beach
Surrounded by many people
You grab my hand and we walk away from it
With a blanket under your arm
We walk a bit of a distance away

After finding a spot on the beach
We lay the blanket down on the sand
We kick our shoes off
And lay down on the blanket
Staring at the stars

Much has gone on for us this summer
Lots of memories that I'm sure we'll remember

You and I wonder about many things
What our lives will be like once summer ends
There's so much we want to ask
But at the end of it all
The only conclusion that I can come up with
Is that only the stars know

Only the stars know of where our lives will go
once summer ends
Only the stars know if we'll still be friends in
the future
Only the stars know of the brass knuckles,
champagne, and valentines
They seem to like that combination
Only the stars know of the many miracles we
spin with the help of our hands and words

I know there's many questions you have for me
Yet, don't try to ask me my dear
I don't have the answers to your questions
Only the stars know

The sweet dusk is married to the insane twilight
As we stare up at the stars in the sky tonight

We both know in our lives now
That many hopes are hanging on the stars
Not just ours
But legions, regions, towns and cities
And many other places where people, places,
and things dwell

Justin Gildow

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/only-the-stars-know/
