Today the circus arrives in town
to a barren place that's been cast aside
to a bleak corner in a barren land
out of the reach of God and Satan alike.

They have brought with them trunks
full of palaces and mighty kings
with stunning queens, with monsters and
wild beasts and caseloads full of dreams.

For the people's entertainment they proclaim
a show that will amaze and thrill
with death defying acts upon the high wire
and terrifying feats of daring skill.

Come to the greatest show and see
amazing magic that confounds the mind,
dwarves and giants from lands over the sea
all for your amusement and sheer delight.

A forlorn youth watches lost in dreams
of a life far away from this little town
where he is the king of the high trapeze,
the shining star, the one who wears the crown.

Spellbound he resolves to run away
to a life full of danger and thrills
but in the cold light of day he stays
his will weakens and his dream wilts.

Chris Zachariou

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-circus-15/
