I was not lonely till you came,
Before you begged to share
Whatever thoughts, kept me so mute
And strangely far removed -

I had to flash an empty smile,
And bear your puzzled gaze,
Rather than dare to burst my heart
Trying to make you feel,
The beauty of the grey-rose dusk,
Dying a painless death.

I was not lonely til you came -
Were you aware of it?
I never felt so sadly lost
As when, you rashly broke,
the sacred stillness of my thoughts.

September 1955

Footnotes:
...must I waste words explaining what
I feel? It's just another sunset
so you said, another weary
day... and so you broke
the spell! Poor innocent! you
starve your soul on what you
cannot see. Must you begrudge my
silence? You do not feed on stars,
you walk beneath them...

Copyright 2008

Lourdes Pena Goco

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/regrets-37/
