China holds "anti-terror" drills in restive Xinjiang region

ROUGH CUT, NO REPORTER NARRATION<br/> <br />STORY: Paramilitary in China's restive northwest Xinjiang region held a series of security drills over five days in late June, state media reported.<br/> <br />Chinese state broadcaster CCTV showed footage of the "anti-terror" exercises covering a variety of scenarios, such as raids on residential housing and combating a plane hijacking.<br/> <br />The drills come just days before the fifth anniversary of the 2009 Urumqi riots on July 5.<br/> <br />The deadly ethnic riots of 2009 Urumqi killed nearly 200 people when Uighurs clashed with members of the majority ethnic Han Chinese community.<br/> <br />China has tightened security measures across Xinjiang after violent attacks which the government says has left over 200 people dead over the past year or so.<br/> <br />At least 380 people have been detained in the last month in a sweeping crackdown on violence in Xinjiang.<br/> <br />Exiled Uighur groups and human rights activists say the government's repressive policies in Xinji
