Lagerfeld, Gaultier offer contrasting visions in Paris

Karl Lagerfeld has presented a cool, elegant Autumn-Winter collection at his latest show for Chanel at Paris Fashion week.

Lagerfeld has said he was paying tribute to the Franco-Swiss architect and urban planner Le Corbusier; but it was Corbusier with a twist, as heavily sequined models took to the pure white floor, their heavy embellishment bringing a distinctly baroque air to proceedings.

More modern in inspiration were the haircuts, spiky ruffled quiffs, paired with predominantly white, clean cut, outfits.

Lagerfeld appeared in his usual black of course, taking the applause with a pregnant model, Ashleigh Good, in the traditional role of a couture bride.

The ever inventive Jean Paul Gaultier was also presenting his latest collection in Paris, saying he was inspired by “vampires, and blood, and haemoglobin”.

The contrast with Lagerfeld was stark, with bright reds and deep, dark black the dominant colours. The Gothic overtones made it a dramatic show and one that had a major surprise at the end.

Austria’s Eurovision song contest winner, Conchita Wurst took to the catwalk at the end of the show. She was even given the privilege of modelling the maid of honour outfit.

That is traditionally the second last design displayed at fashion shows, only followed by the wedding dress, and it is a slot usually given to a particularly favoured model.
