The United Nations Security Council has issued a statement calling for the reinstitution of a ceasefire reached between Israel and militant factions in Gaza in 2012.<br /><br />“The Security Council members called for de-escalation of the situation, restoration of calm and reinstitution of the November 2012 ceasefire,” said Eugene Gasana, UN Security Council President. <br /><br />Meanwhile the sound of explosions were reported in Jerusalem shortly after sirens wailed across the city.<br /><br />Israeli officials say more than 500 rockets have been fired at Israel by Hamas since Tuesday, and Israel has hit more than 1,000 targets in Gaza.<br /><br />One building in the south of Israel was damaged by an aerial strike. No people were wounded in the attack.<br /><br />On Sunday, foreign ministers from France, Germany the United States and Britain plan to discuss the need for a ceasefire between the Palestinians and the Israelis.<br /><br />They will meet in Vienna for talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.
