Israel has accepted a ceasefire that would end a week-long shelling war in Gaza. <br /><br />Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet voted to approve Egypt’s proposal for a truce – which would bring airstrikes against the Palestinian territory to a halt.<br /><br />Early reports suggest senior Hamas officials have rejected the terms of the ceasefire.<br /><br />The past few hours have seen cross-border exchanges of much lower intensity.<br /><br />A senior Israeli defence chief says the bombardment of Gaza has left Hamas seriously weakened. <br /><br />Two nephews of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh were among almost 200 killed. <br /><br />The organisation which controls Gaza has not formally responded. But its armed wing rejected the plan as a “surrender” – even though it had not seen the full text.
