EU leaders met in Brussels on Wednesday to carve up the bloc’s big jobs for the next five years.<br /><br />Heads of state and government are looking to pick replacements for European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, as well as a successor EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.<br /><br />One of the names in the frame to replace Van Rompuy is Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt.<br /><br />Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has been pushing for his foreign minister, Federica Mogherini, to take over from Ashton.<br /><br />But his bid has been criticised by Baltic and Eastern European states which are wary of Mogherini’s perceived closeness to Russia.<br /><br />A possible compromise candidate could be Kristalina Georgieva, Bulgaria’s EU commissioner.
