"À travers l’univers" est le troisième volet de ma série cinématographique "Mes villes d’habitation". <br />"À travers l’univers" est un inventaire filmé des 127 rues (dans une première partie) et des 17 places (dans une seconde partie) de la ville de Saint-Marcellin dans l’Isère (France). <br /> <br />(Gérard Courant) <br /> <br />English I <br /> <br />"Through the Universe" is the third section of my cinematic series "Mes Villes d’Habitation" ("My Dwelling Towns"). <br />The film represents the autopsy of Saint-Marcellin, a small village in the Isère Region where I spent my childhood during the 50s. <br />"Through the Universe" displays, in alphabetical order, all the 127 streets and 17 public squares of the town (updated to the period of the shooting, in 2004-2005), all shot following the same rules: in a 20-second-long wide, static, single shot. C.) <br /> <br />English III <br /> <br />A sort of analytic geography for memory, Courant’s "A travers l’univers" decided to make an “autopsy” of Saint-Marcellin, a small town in the Isère region where the filmmaker spent his childhood in the 50’s. Half a century after, Courant’s eye captures the French town where he grew up. Perhaps to avoid easy nostalgia, picturesque portraits or being captivated with the small town’s hellish grace Courant creates an almost mathematical method to organize the images: he presents in alphabetic order all the 127 streets and 17 public squares Saint-Marcellin has at the time of the shooting, all of them recorded with a single fixed 20 second shot. The result is a perplex immersion, part spatial documentary part structural film, with as much immediacy as formal rigor. <br /> <br />Espanol <br /> <br />Como una suerte de geografía analítica de la memoria, con "A travers l’univers", Courant se propuso hacer una “autopsia” de Saint-Marcellin, un pequeño pueblo en la región de Isère, donde el cineasta pasó su infancia durante la década del ‘50. A medio siglo de distancia, el ojo de Courant registra exhaustivamente el pueblo francés donde vivió algunos de sus primeros años de vida. Tal vez para no caer ni en la nostalgia fácil, ni en el pintoresquismo o el embelesamiento con la gracia infernal del pueblo chico, Courant crea un método casi matemático para organizar las imágenes: presenta, en orden alfabético, todas las 127 calles y 17 plazas públicas que tiene Saint-Marcellin en el momento de rodaje, registradas siempre en un único plano fijo de 20 segundos de duración. El resultado es una inmersión perpleja, con tanto de documental espacial como de película estructural, que tienen tanta inmediatez como rigor formal.
