The first of the bodies was recovered soon after rescue workers arrived.<br/> <br />Unrelenting rain had triggered a landslide that buried the village of Ambegaon in western India.<br/> <br />More than 70 homes were engulfed. The village is home to more than 700 people.<br/> <br />Many are believed to be dead and many others trapped awaiting rescue.<br/> <br />Friends and family of the victims are still in shock.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) VISITOR TO THE VILLAGE, RANADEEP GOKHALE, SAYING:<br/> <br />"I had come to visit my relatives. I often come here. When I came I discovered that the entire village had been destroyed."<br/> <br />Landslides are common in the area at this time of year.<br/> <br />Monsoon season brings heavy rains. Deforestation has left local populations vulnerable.<br/> <br />Rescue workers here say they face a daunting task as the death toll continues to rise.
