Poland: Warsaw Uprising remembered 70 years on

Poland has been marking the 70th anniversary of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising.<br /><br />It began on August 1 as the Soviet Army was advancing towards the Polish capital. The Polish resistance and city residents rose up against the Nazi forces that had occupied their country for five years.<br /><br />The street battles continued for 63 days but the help they were expecting from the Soviet Army never came, as Soviet troops waited on the outskirts of Warsaw.<br /><br />The uprising was crushed by the Nazis, leaving more than 200,000 people dead <br /><br />Nazi troops then razed two thirds of the city in revenge and tens of thousands of Poles were sent to labour camps.<br /><br />Soon after, the German army fled, allowing the Red Army to march in.
