Hundreds are feared among the dead and missing after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook southwest China.<br/> <br />Chinese State TV shows footage of the rescue operation as members of the military dig through piles of dirt and cement for any sign of life.<br/> <br />At least one school collapsed during the earthquake, and some 12,000 homes reduced to rubble, the Chinese Xinhua news agency reported. Electricity was cut in the area.<br/> <br />The quake registered at the shallow depth of less than 1 mile, the U.S. Geological Survey said.<br/> <br />The quake, whose epicenter hit the mountainous Ludian county, is regularly hit by quakes.<br/> <br />In 1974, more than 1,400 people were killed when an earthquake struck the same region.
