Kolkata, earlier known as Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state west bengal. It was the commercial capital of East India. its name is derived from one of the three villages 'Kalikata' in the area before the arrival of the British. Which also means "Land of Kali". In order to erase the British rule legacy and reflect its original pronunciation its name was changed to "Kolkata" from its official english name "Calcutta" in 2001. <br /><br />With 4.5 million residents, and a population of 15.7 million people in the metropolitan area, including suburbs, Kolkata city is the 3rd most populated in India and the 13th most populated in the world.
