It took more than 500 firefighters most of Monday afternoon (August 25) before authorities in central Portugal were able to declare the Pampilhosa da Serra forest fire under control.<br/> <br />Several aircraft and helicopters joined the battle during the afternoon.<br/> <br />The village had been partially evacuated.<br/> <br />Similar blazes are still burning out of control in the south of the country, fuelled by record temperatures and drought conditions. Sixteen people has been killed.
