A large wildfire which broke out on Monday in southern Greece has been brought under control but not before encircling the ancient city of Messini.<br /><br />The blaze tore through around 2000 hectares of forestland and olive groves near Kalamata which is 250 km south of Athens.<br /><br />Residents of four villages were evacuated as a precaution.<br /><br />Each summer, high temperatures and arson cause numerous wildfires in Greece but this year the number has been 25 percent less than in 2013.
