Volcanic eruption in Iceland puts aviation authorities on high alert

A volcano began erupting overnight on Thursday in Iceland, leading aviation authorities to raise the warning level to red, the highest level of significance.<br /><br />So far no volcanic ash has been detected, Iceland authorities said.<br /><br />A fissure eruption of about 1km long started in a lava field north of the Bardarbunga volcano, part of a large volcano system hidden beneath the Vatnajokull ice cap in central Iceland.<br /><br />The area has been hit by several tremors over the past week.<br /><br />The level red code means that an eruption is imminent or underway with a significant emission of ash likely.<br /><br />Air Traffic Control has closed down the airspace above the volcano.<br /><br />In 2010, ash from the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland shut down much of Europe’s airspace for six days.
