20 trapped gold miners rescued in Nicaragua as search continues

Twenty miners who had been trapped underground for two days after a landslide at a gold mine in Nicaragua have been freed.<br /><br />Authorities said the men who were aged between 18 and 35 had no visible injuries but they were taken to a local clinic for check ups.<br /><br />Those who were rescued had all been in the same part of the mine. The search now continues for another seven men.<br /><br />Hundreds of relatives and fellow miners had gathered outside the tunnel leading into the mine to pray for their safe rescue.<br /><br />Groups of five or 10 rescuers entered the mine on wooden ladders which they tied themselves onto to get in and reach the men.<br /><br />Two other miners had managed to escape on their own.<br /><br />The accident happened at the El Comal mine in the Bonanza region in the north of country.<br /><br />The miners are all freelancers who have to sell any gold they find to the company. <br /><br />Two other miners died in the same area last month.
