"The water level of the reservoir was 623 feet at 6 pm on Thursday," superintending engineer, HDR, R K Panda said. He ruled out any danger downstream due to release of water.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast rain in most parts of the state in next three days under the influence of a fresh low pressure brewing over the bay. "Intensity of the fresh low pressure will be known on Friday," said director, IMD centre, Odisha, Sarat Sahu.

Sambalpur town received 120 mm rainfall during the last two days, affecting normal life. Several low- lying areas in the western Odisha town have been inundated. "People in low-lying areas have been shifted to safer places," said a government officer in Sambalpur.

"The district administration is on alert and there is no need to panic," said collector (Sambalpur) Balwant Singh. He said the district administration is prepared to face any eventuality in case there is heavy rain in next three days.

"The rain was not as heavy as experienced in August first week when life was thrown out of gear. However, the duration of rainfall was more this time, creating panic among people," said Abhiram Panigrahi, a local.

Neighbouring Hirakud received 130 mm rainfall during last two days. Other places, which received heavy rain during the period are Angul (88 mm), Puri (61 mm) and Balasore ( 41 mm). The state capital received 16 mm rainfall during the day.
