<p>In India, a simple English test has caused thousands of students to hold protests. They say the entrance exam for the civil service is elitist and discriminatory. In a country of 1.24 billion people, English is the mother tongue of only around 230,000, although some 87.5 million Indians do speak it as a second language. Still, some media commentators have gone as far to talk of "linguistic apartheid".
