The Mediterranean is continuing to take a grizzly toll on migrants desperate to cross it – a boat carrying up to 250 people has sunk whilst trying to reach European shores.<br /><br />Libyan officials say only 36 people have been saved from the water.<br /><br />Violence in an often troubled Libya has both increased the numbers crossing and decreased local rescue capabilities. <br /><br />Most aim for Italy – so far in 2014 more than 100,000 migrants have arrived in the country.<br /><br />But even as officials take stock of such numbers, another tragedy is unraveling.<br /><br />Nearly 500 people are feared dead, based on the alleged testimony of two migrants, who say a boat went down near Malta last week.
