Ukrainian president lays out reform plans in bid for EU membership

Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko has laid out his plans for social and economic reforms over the next six years.<br /><br /> He hopes they will allow the country to apply for EU membership in 2020.<br /><br /> Poroshenko said the 60 reform packages were vital for the survival of the country. He named the priorities as: fighting corruption, tax reform, business deregulation, the decentralisation and reform of state governance, reforming the judiciary, energy independence and strengthening security and defence.<br /><br /> Although an oligarch himself, Poroshenko said he wanted to dismantle the power held by oligarchs and open up the market.<br /><br /> “Only reforms will give answers to the demands of potential international investors. The alternative is to stay alone with Russia,” Poroshenko said.<br /><br /> The president also aims to set up an anti-corruption bureau along the lines of the FBI in October.<br /><br /> Poroshenko wants to see the package of draft laws ready to be passed by the the new parliament elected at the end of October.
