The current health monitoring practice is primarily based on visual inspection. However, due to high manpower demand such inspections cannot be performed frequently. <br />An alternative to the periodic visual inspection can be continuously operating instrumented structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. <br />The recent developments in sensor technology, especially when wireless technology is considered have opened up new gates in terms of health monitoring and preemptive fault detection.
