Officials say the death toll is expected to rise to about 46 people.<br/> <br />There was no warning before the volcano erupted on Saturday sending thick clouds of ash and smoke into the air.<br/> <br />Hundreds of people were trapped on the mountain for hours before it was safe to leave.<br/> <br />One survivor used his phone to capture the moment he was enveloped by the ash cloud.<br/> <br />Mt Ontake is Japan's second-highest active volcano. It's last major eruption was in 1979.
