The eerily quiet aftermath in Ukraine of what had been a violent first day of school.<br/> <br />At least ten people were killed when shells hit a school playground in the eastern city of Donetsk.<br/> <br />No children were killed but witnesses say the dead include a parent and a teacher as well as six people inside this burnt-out minivan.<br/> <br />Donetsk is a stronghold of pro-Russian rebels fighting the Ukrainian army for greater independence from the central government in Kiev.<br/> <br />The shelling didn't deter students in the nearby town of Makiivka from celebrating their first day back at school.<br/> <br />Many schools in rebel held areas in the east are opening a month late because so many buildings have suffered damage during months of fighting.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) MOTHER OF SCHOOLCHILD, LYUBOV, SAYING:<br/> <br />"Thank God we had this first of October, this holiday.
