Hong Kong unrest hits retailers

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protesters have forced the closure of dozen of high street stores.<br /><br />It comes as China begins a week-long holiday, known as Golden Week, a period in which thousands of tourists ferry in from the mainland for a getaway that’s widely seen as retail therapy.<br /><br />According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the average overnight visitor spends around 500 euros during his or her stay.<br /><br />Hong Kong’s retail sector relies heavily on mainland Chinese visitors, who contributed around one-third of the city’s retail sales in 2013, according to Credit Suisse.
