The fight against Islamic State extremists in the Syrian town of Kobani is being won, according to the US military.<br /><br />Kurdish forces on the ground say that ISIL has been driven out of most of the town, which borders Turkey. US-led air strikes have helped push back the jihadists, with more than a dozen strikes carried out over the past 24 hours.<br /><br />US State Department spokesperson,Jen Psaki, confirmed the US had been in direct talks with Kurdish opposition fighters in Syria.<br /><br />“So, as you know, we have for some time had conversations through intermediaries with the PYD. We have engaged over the course of just last weekend directly with the PYD,” she said.<br /><br />The town has been under siege for weeks. Fighting is still continuing and the security situation remains tenuous. <br /><br />The hope is the city can be liberated within the next few days.
