Personal belongings of passengers who died on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 have been delivered to the town of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine.

They had been driven by lorry from the crash scene which lies in a war zone controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

The delivery follows negotiations with rebels. After being analysed the items are due to be sent on to victims’ relatives.

They had been gathered up by local residents and Dutch investigators who visited the crash site earlier this week, despite ongoing fighting a few kilometres away.

The belongings had been lying out in the open for almost three months; some were burnt or otherwise damaged.

An initial report by the Dutch inquiry team said the damage to the plane suggested it had been pierced by many high-speed objects. Two-thirds of the victims were Dutch nationals.

Kyiv alleges rebels armed by Moscow shot down the plane. Russia and the separatists deny the accusations.
