Canadian parliament re-opens with homage to its 'hero'

Sergeant-at-Arms, Kevin Vickers received a hero’s welcome in the Canadian parliament as it reopened on Thursday.<br /><br />Prime Minister Stephen Harper thanked him for his heroics after downing the gunman who terrorised the city a day earlier.<br /><br />Before getting back to business, MPs held a moment’s silence in memory of Nathan Cirillo, the soldier who was shot dead at the National War Memorial.<br /><br />Harper reiterated Canada would not be intimidated by acts of terror. He announced that plans to give the national intelligence agency more surveillance powers would be fast-tracked.<br /><br />Moments earlier police had arrested a man at gunpoint just steps away from the prime minister as he laid a wreath at the war memorial in honour of the soldier. It was not immediately clear what the man’s intentions were.<br /><br />Parliament returned to work amid tightened security, and a flag flying at half-mast in recognition of the events which rocked the Canadian capital.
