The little boy, draped in his hide, <br />His eyes in a gasping quiver. <br />He had made a pact that day to climb <br />That tree near the Amazon River. <br /> <br />The skin beneath his fingernails <br />Bled from scraping against the bark. <br />The scuffle took more than halfday <br />And it was beginning to get dark. <br /> <br />A bird fluttered past him, <br />He looked down and saw the river-flow. <br />His arms and legs were ready to give in <br />But there were just a dozen metres to go. <br /> <br />When he got to the top, <br />He sat at the edge of the highest bough, <br />On the highest tree, <br />Didn't care how to make it back down <br />Because he made it just in time to see <br />A firelight torrent spread across the entire jungle, <br />When beneath the canopy <br />It looks only like a sleepy, bright bungle. <br />The meteor shower above the forest halls, <br />Falling cherubs over the Amazon <br />Right before night falls.<br /><br />K.
