A young hawk surveys
the mise-en-scene
from a fence post.
Post-prandial, quarry
and killing elude his mind
for a moment.

He crouches and considers
sparrows building nests
and meadow mice
at play. Red poppies
are rocked by the breeze
to sleep in their grassy cradle.

Head bowed, acquiescent,
he seems contemplative, monkish.
Perhaps even birds of prey
pray.

Sonny Rainshine

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/hawk-s-reprieve/
