In two thousand and eleven

On February two and three

A cyclone crossed the Queensland coast

Her name; it was “Yasi”

“The biggest storm we’ve ever seen, ”

The Weather Bureau said.

“We wouldn’t be at all surprised

If she left behind some dead.”

She came in on the Wednesday

And she blew hard all the night

The little town of Mission Beach

Took the brunt of all her spite

The rain was horizontal

Streaked with silver light

Mother Nature in all her power

Was an awesome bloody sight.

The trees they groaned and shuddered

And fell crashing to the earth

They’d not held up against the winds

For all their mighty girth

The aftermath was awful

Homes smashed, possessions lost

Tears fell when people looked around

And started adding up the cost

The roads were blocked with fallen trees

The power lines were down

But there’s something very special

About our Queensland town

Three babes were born that dreadful night

When the cyclone came to play

But ne’er a life did Yasi claim

Before she went away.

Copyright

Robbie Chivers 2011

Robbie Chivers

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/cyclone-yasi/
