I'll never forget how they picked up those rocks <br />Trembling with anger, self-justified <br />How they pointed at me with those long bony fingers <br />And told Him, almost excitedly, according to law, <br />I must die. <br /> <br />I'll never forget the remorse and the guilt, <br />The stark realization of what I had done. <br />Nor the way that He listened with hardly an interest, <br />As if to ignore them, He stooped and He wrote <br />On the ground. <br /> <br />Then He rose with a purpose, <br />Demanding respect, but with love in His tone, <br />"Whoever among you, is sinless, <br />Cast the first stone." <br /> <br />And I'll never forget the startled expressions, <br />The grim, rapid flashbacks of things they had done, <br />The stones being dropped, by the tears at my feet <br />The guilt, the deflation as they filed away, <br />One by one. <br /> <br />No I'll never forget how He didn't condemn me, <br />How the terror and anguish was instantly hushed, <br />Nor the love in His eyes, nor the promise I made Him, <br />And I'll never forget… <br />What He wrote <br />In the dust.<br /><br />Trevor Toews<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/what-he-wrote-in-the-dust/
