UP and down the lanes of love, <br />With the bright blue skies above, <br />And the grass beneath our feet, <br />O, so green and O, so sweet! <br />There we wandered boy and girl, <br />Sun-kissed was each golden curl; <br />Hand in hand we used to stray, <br />Hide-and-seek we used to play; <br />Just a pair of kids were we, <br />Laughing, loving, trouble free. <br /> <br />Up and down the lanes of love <br />With the same blue skies above, <br />Next we wandered, bride and groom, <br />With the roses all in bloom; <br />Arm in arm we strolled along, <br />Life was then a merry song, <br />Laughing, dancing as we went, <br />Lovers, cheerful and content; <br />No one else, we thought, could be <br />Quite so happy as were we. <br /> <br />Up and down the lanes of love, <br />Dark and gray the skies above; <br />Hushed the song-birds' merry tune, <br />Withered every rose of June. <br />Grief was ours to bear that day, <br />All our smiles had passed away, <br />Sorrow we must bear together, <br />Love must have its rainy weather, <br />Keeping still our faith in God, <br />As the lanes of love we trod. <br /> <br />Up and down the lanes of love, <br />Still the skies are bright above. <br />Feeble now we go our way, <br />Time has turned our hair to gray; <br />Rain and sunshine, joy and woe, <br />Both of us have come to know. <br />All of life's experience <br />Has been given us to sense; <br />Still our hearts keep perfect tune <br />As they did in days of June.<br /><br />Edgar Albert Guest<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/up-and-down-the-lanes-of-love/
