Sleeping among the best of fun,
Far beyond city or day,
he lay diminished,
Unmoved.

Spirit of life,
Spirit of death,
The chosen one,
When the rat came for fun.

Over the knee,
Jumping jubilee,
Behind the head,
The rat knew his dread.

Spoiled rotten,
gone and forgotten,
the discourse began.

Entered the rat,
keeping record and track,
on the trails of his mind.

Awakened by the accountant;
notice us now?
Peering through the darkness,
'I can see you, oh noble one;
who won the respect of human kind? '
I am nothing.'

Joseph Walden

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/glory-of-the-rat/
