I tripped over while walking through the woodland path
And now I'm falling

I landed on some golden Autumn leaves and some hard acorns
But I'm still falling

I'm falling down through the damp earth
Through the memories of ramblers
And amblers
And dogs who have sniffed their way through
The brambles

I am falling through the ground
And I can hear the sound
Of copper mines
Of lay lines
Through ancient churches
& shrines

I am falling though bones
And ancient weathered tombs
I am falling through alters and crypts
And through fits
My body is quaking
This descent is so shaking
Past skeletal remains
Of Medieval prisoners in chains
My faith is forsaking

I'm falling through ghosts
Only they are the hosts
Of this realm down below
Of this world we don't know

I'm falling down low
Do I really want to know
What I will find
Any of my kind
When I land
In the sands
Of the world down below

Soon I will know
And look up with love
Through the soil and the bones and the earth

That world up above

Maurice Rowlands

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/stumble-and-fall/
