Once upon a time <br />'One Nation Under God' we'd be <br />The birthright of what our nation finds <br />To believe in Liberty <br /> <br />Now the ties that bind the strongest <br />Are the ones whom are held by faith <br />Though some don't have it, it's been <br />believed to last the longest <br />Leading our country through those pearly <br />gates <br /> <br />Upon the power of a dollar bill <br />Is how we think gets us ahead <br />And year after year most are struggling <br />still <br />In a nation where many of the poor need <br />fed <br /> <br />There are those who now teach the children <br />at home <br />Where they are also taught how to pray <br />School was once a place we heard we are <br />under one God alone <br />But is what our teachers now cannot say <br /> <br />What kind of strength do we represent to <br />our kids <br />Is it the kind that gives them hope <br />Or are they learning now that man-made <br />things holds the power in how to live <br />And if you have that, it makes it easier <br />to cope <br /> <br />You would have thought by now our nation <br />would be ahead <br />And we are in some things, but not where it <br />counts <br />More poverty, more crime and now more soldiers <br />dead <br />And peace only to those who have money in the <br />right amount <br /> <br />Close should be the brotherhood of all men <br />Holding our heads high with pride <br />But now it's seen and tatooed on skin <br />Instead of our hearts inside!<br /><br />Katherine Nordhaus<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/one-nation-under-god-7/
