A Sri Lankan official has said she doesn’t think any survivors will be found under the debris of a deadly landslide in the central village of Haldummulla. <br /><br />Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera estimates around a hundred people were buried. Other estimates suggest up to 192 local residents are missing, and around 150 houses were destroyed.<br /><br />Soldiers and government officials conducting rescue operations say it is difficult to give a precise number as population data was lost in the three-kilometre-long landslip.<br /><br />Heavy rain has heightened the threat of further mudslides, hindering rescue efforts and prompting almost 500 locals to spend the night of the landslide (October 29) in a nearby school.
