Twas Christmas day along the battle front
And killing somehow didn't seem quite right
Though many scream was heard and many grunt
And guns were fired, keeping up the fight -
But someone in a trench a carol sang
And someone on the other side joined in.
Soon Silent Night across the maelstrom rang
And joyful sounds replaced the battle's din.
A truce was reached and into no-man's land
Soldiers from each side arose and met,
Exchanged small gifts and shook each others' hand
And being foes was easy to forget.

Christmas day unites men, it is said.
On Boxing Day they shot each other dead.

Terry Donovan

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/christmas-day-truce/
