It stands erect <br />displaying its spiroid <br />stripes of black and white <br />and gives comfort <br />to the shores of North Carolina at night. <br /> <br />Its past had ups and downs. <br />It fell prey to Civil War attackers, <br />then lightning struck it all around. <br /> <br />Its a legendary insignia. <br />It gives signals to ones on the ocean <br />as a guide and mark that calms, <br />when perhaps, the sea's waves and motion <br />can make you lose your way. <br />It lights your path, clear as day. <br /> <br />In 1863, when it was 60 years old, <br />It got a face lift so others would know <br />and see its beauty, <br />despite the water's rust; <br />to showcase its stately structure <br />you dreamed to see it or bust. <br /> <br />Its the highest lighthouse <br />in all the world. <br />Its 191 feet extension <br />can bring romance to you and your girl. <br /> <br />If you live in the Carolinas <br />you know it all too well. <br />You can enjoy Cape Hatteras <br />in a boat; you can set sail.<br /><br />Carol D.
