There was terror
all night.
Blood and guts
that dimmed Dawn's first light.
And in the midst of it
I was, alone with helplessness
and needless slaughter.
I tossed and turned,
watched as they burned
a mother and her daughter.
I ran away with leaden limbs,
a voice that had no sound.
And then they caught me, brought me back
and threw me to the ground.
They tortured me
and raised the sword....
when angels woke me up.
I'd seen myself up with the Lord,
'run over' did my cup.

Your face looked at me
from above,
you held my shoulders then.
And now you laid beside me, love
and kissed this frightened man.

I kissed you back, still slightly shaking,
you held me very tight.
It felt as if our lips were baking,
we kissed 'til Dusk's last light.

I know that in the dream they would
have left my head in place.
But be that as it may, I should
prefer to hold your face.

And to be loved and to be kissed,
why could you ever need
to add more riches to your list
and wallow in your greed?

'Cause if I owned the Eiffel Tower
or San Francisco Bay -
one kiss from YOU, my lovely flower:
I'd give it all away!

Herbert Nehrlich

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/dawn-s-first-light/
