At the fourth phase of night my window -
opens to the grove beside the river
A window opens in the starry skies
pouring heavenly mist on the shores
Night colours spilt on the mist
touch eternal art of winter nights

One hundred palm trees on the banks
entwine and kiss and lick the wine
In trance they sway across the skies in-
ever lasting temptation
On odd branches of chempaka trees, Gandharvas-
crush the tiny breasts of little goddesses

Green snakes on hibiscus trees
and little man-biter snakes
shed their skin and offer salutations
As King Cobras with emerald heads -
drink poison nectar in the nipples of -
erred Apsaras chained to rose-wood trees

Sariwalah fishes with golden scales-
meditate beneath the opaque pond.
Lesbian frogs with ugly eyes-
squat on top of lotus leaves
One hundred thousand jasmines bloom
a hundred million fire flies take off

Pining trees with erected barks-
rub at the back and tickle the waists-
of wandering souls of virgin vampires
Once in a while they strip her bare
and lashes her with antique branches
Then she lives on the tallest one-
One hundred tiny ghosts are born

Year old fairies with little hips
flap their wings and bite their lips
As naughty wines and creeper plants
grow along their subtle curves
and smell the space between their legs

The seventh phase of night arrives
a drizzle shower soaks the shores
Winds and nightingales of the eastern mountain-
sing an ethereal lullaby
All the world is put to sleep.A lotus blooms.
And all the worlds born again. All again.

Prakash Nair

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/winter-night-in-kerala/
