Sandra Osborne - Through a Child's Eyes

J
In a child’s mind, a Father is a hero.
He’s magic and he’s mystery,
he’s the strongest man
in all the world.
In a child’s mind, a Father can do no wrong.
What Father says, what Father does,
is how they want to be.
S
But sometimes a Father,
being human and frail,
forgets that the child
Is even much more so.
And with anger to rule him,
his face grows reddened
and his words turn dumb,
as if he learned, just now,
to speak.
J
In a child’s eyes, Father is the one person,
in all the world, who can do no wrong.
So when their Father uses words
that can hurt and causes pain,
the adoring child feels free
to use those words on others,
in the same way their Father
just used those words on them.
S
So fine, I’m an idiot.
Or so my father says.
But he also said never
to call anyone an idiot,
“idiot” being a bad word.
So Father, it seems like lately,
what you say turns upside down,
and now I hear I’m an idiot.
So fine. I am, I'm an idiot.
But that must make it fine, Father
to use these words on her,
for she is an idiot, too.
J
But fathers, even with their faults
Are always the one their child adores
For children are virtually sponges
Soaking up everything they hear.
So repeating the words
that Father says
should never be a surprise,
not when you look at life
through a Childs Eyes

Sandra Osborne and Janice M Pickett
from the collection

The pendulum swings

Sandra Osborne

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/through-a-child-s-eyes/
