we live on an island fringed
with bridges, steel
things connecting us to other

islands and to the continent.
great bridges, famous ones,
complex works of engineering,

one next to the other, almost like roads
denying the beaches and shorelines.
from each window of our house

we see a different bridge,
in every direction there is water.
the roadways rise like vapor

from the spits of land and sway
in the air over water. from
our window we watch them rise,

steel light in the air, giving gently
to the wind. I give you these
bridges, love, so we can

explode towards the sky, the
two of us breathing together
like steel and water.

Jesse Weiner

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/bridges-2/
